In Austria, smoking is a major concern, as Austria is at bottom according to the Tabacco Control Scale. Therefore, an annual meeting takes place that is hosted by one of the provinces in Austria. This year, Carinthia hosted the congress from 3. – 5. November 2014 in Pörtschach. For this conference, Melanie Tomintz was invited to present the advantage of simulation and visualisation of spatial data, as this is mainly a new area for many delegates.
With around 100 delegates from different departments focusing on prevention of addiction, the presentation showing the use of Geosimulation methods to support governmental actions brought new thought-provoking impulses. Further, results showing the distribution of the simulated smokers at municipality level was mainly new too many delegates, but there was great interest to know more about producing such maps.
